The President of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, Vessela Letcheva, participated in the ceremony honoring the women’s national basketball team that won Olympic silver medals in Moscow in 1980. The 45th anniversary was marked with a special celebration at the Sports Museum at the Vasil Levski National Stadium.
The athletes in attendance received special jerseys with the inscription “45 Years of Greatness” and red roses from the Bulgarian Basketball Federation.
“It is important to respect history because without it there is no future. What you did in Moscow in 1980, as well as our national volleyball teams – men and women at the same Games, remains recorded in Bulgaria’s Olympic history in gold letters. You are an inspiration. The recent successes of our volleyball players show that where there has been success, there will be success again. These are memories that unite the nation and make us feel proud to be Bulgarian,” said Vessela Letcheva.
At the end of the ceremony, Vesela Lecheva announced that it is important to have a larger sports museum that can house the medals and trophies of our glorious athletes. She committed herself to this mission as a sports manager.
“Because of your successes and those of our young athletes, Bulgaria needs a new, larger, and more modern sports museum. A place with a big screen where we can watch footage of our Olympic medalists’ matches,” added Letcheva.
