Vessela Letcheva: The Olympic Games in Paris entered every Bulgarian home

The Olympic Games in Paris entered every Bulgarian home. This is what Vessela Letcheva said during the meeting of the IOC Public Affairs and Corporate Communications Commission.

“Apart from the successes of Bulgarian athletes, the data from Bulgarian media showed that 75% of our compatriots watched, read and followed what was happening in Paris through social networks,” Letcheva said.

The Commission meeting was the first since Paris 2024 and specific audience data and performance evaluation were presented. Half of the world’s population had followed the Olympic Games, said IOC President Thomas Bach, who again gave high praise for both the hosts and everyone involved with the organisation.

“Despite political tensions and raging wars, we had peaceful Games. In Paris, the athletes and all members of the Olympic family made a call for an end to the conflicts, and the competitions succeeded, at least for a little while, in uniting the world against aggression and hatred, they gave hope,” Bach stated.

The Commission’s report noted that the Games were an undisputed success not only because of the sporting achievements but also because of the huge spectator interest.

“Bulgarian National Television’s live broadcasts of weightlifter Carlos Nassar’s championship trials, the rhythmic gymnastics finals, wrestling and the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games achieved record results and became the most watched events of the summer. BNT’s daily coverage of everything happening in Paris also attracted a large audience, which became part of the Olympic family. In Bulgaria, viewers also watched the Olympic Games on the streaming platform Max, as well as on Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2. These broadcasts were watched by 49% more viewers than the Tokyo Games,” Vessela Letcheva said, citing data for Bulgaria.

“The goals were set high in Paris and our task is to make sure that Olympic values and ideas are the focus of public attention throughout the rest of the year,” she added.
